Lecture “Ground-based monitoring of the carbon budget in soils of agroecosystems”

February 15, 2024 at the Faculty of Geography of Lomonosov Moscow State University the member of the “Ritm Carbon” consortium set a lecture within the discipline “Large-scale soil mapping”for the 2nd year students of the Department of Landscape Geochemistry and Soil Geography. Nikolay Lozbenev, a researcher at the Federal Research Center V.V. Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute, a member of the Soil Group of the "Rhytm Carbon" consortium, spoke to the students about the goals and objectives of the project, the importance of studying the carbon cycle, the potential and technologies for carbon sequestration in soils of agroecosystems. During the lecture, students were familiarized with the features of large-scale soil cover mapping when establishing test sites for monitoring carbon reserves in soils of agroecosystems. This included information on the application of satellite imagery, consideration of the land use system and agricultural technologies in soil survey planning. The methodology for monitoring carbon stocks is substantiated and the initial research results on two test sites were presented. Scientists of the Federal Research Center V.V. Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute are participants in the consortium "Rhythm of Carbon" in the work on the project "Russian Climate Monitoring System" (The Key Innovative Project of National Importance, KIP NI, supervised by the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation).
